Former Niagara University athlete and coach Frank Layden will serve as master of ceremonies when 13 individuals, including former major league pitcher Tom Makowski, are enshrined in the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame induction Wednesday at Fontana's, 2440 Clinton St., West Seneca.

The Simon Pures baseball organization will be honored, as well as 10 standout players and three contributors in the administrative category. For tickets, call Bob Miske at 834-1048.

The Buffalo Sabres Alumni will take on the Bedford Blacktop on Sept. 23 in Niagara University's Dwyer Arena. Lockport Junior Service League is hosting the game to benefit Niagara Cerebral Palsy and other community programs.

Former Sabres expected to play include Rob Ray, Danny Gare, Grant Ledyard, Craig Muni, Derek Smith, Larry Playfair and Richie Dunn.

The game will start at 7 p.m. and players will autographs at intermission. Tickets, at $5, are available at several Niagara County businesses, at Dwyer Arena, or call Melissa Bedford at 778-0741.

The Buffalo Bills Booster Club is planning a mini-carnival at its next meeting, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Paul Maguire Suite at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Bills broadcaster Alex Van Pelt and Channel 4's Dennis Williams are set to appear, along with Denny Lynch, director of archives for the Bills. BASKETBALL: The G.E.T. five-on-five tournament will be held Oct. 8 at the North Buffalo Community Center, 203 Sanders Road. The cost is $75 per team. Age divisions: 8-12, 13-17, 18-older. Call Stephen Kulu at 874-6133, ext. 19.

BASKETBALL OFFICIALS: Western New York Board 53 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials will hold clinics for new officials on Oct. 3, Oct. 17, Oct. 14 and Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. at JFK High School, 305 Cayuga Creek Road, Cheektowaga. BASEBALL: The South Cheektowaga Mustangs will hold tryouts for their 2006 12-under boys Cooperstown team on Sept. 24 and 26 at Dartwood Park in Cheektowaga. Players who turn 13 on or after May 1, 2006, are eligible. Call Carl Ertel at 684-6808.

FLOOR HOCKEY: The YWCA of Niagara County will hold a football/field hockey league for girls in first through ninth grades. The eight-week program starts Oct. 24, and the fee is $20. Call 433-6714, ext. 24.

HOCKEY: HockeyBuff senior league for players 40 and older is seeking intermediate and advanced players for season that starts in October at North Buffalo Rink. No novices, please.
