Mayer scores upset over Humphrey

Cheryl Mayer, a former Wyoming County employee from Pike, registered an upset win in the two-way Republican primary for county treasurer.

Mayer bested Perry Supervisor Anne Humphrey, 1,366 to 602, to win the nod.

Mayer will face Democrat-Conservative Carole D. Cunningham in the general election. Treasurer John Edwards is retiring.

In other Republican primary results:

Attica -- Gary C. Theal received 136 votes to defeat Myron Kirch, 40 votes, in the ballot slot for highway superintendent.

Perry -- James Brick polled 235 votes and Terrance Murphy, 165, for town supervisor.

Humphrey did not seek re-election because she was running for county treasurer.

Also, Roger Paddock, 273 votes, and Brian F. Parker, 223, won GOP endorsements for two Town Board seats. David Davis received 193 votes in a losing bid.

Republicans outnumber Democrats in Wyoming County, by a 2-to-1 ratio.
