The City of Olean's November midterm election ballot will not include incumbent Mayor William Quinlan, who was edged out in Democratic Primary voting after one term in office by Ward 2 Alderwoman Joyce Melfi, who has served served six years on the Common Council. Melfi received 609 votes to Quinlan's 494 votes.
Melfi must now face political newcomer David Carucci, an Olean businessman who received 509 primary votes from Republican Party members. Ward 1 Alderman Glenn Van Dixon, who lost the Republican nomination to Carucci with only 245 votes, will remain on the ballot for the Conservative Party. In the Conservative race, Van Dixon received 25 votes to Melfi's 20 votes. Ward 4 Alderman Robert Sader lost the Republican nomination with 235 votes.
The city's mayoral primary precincts saw brisk turnout with 1,105 Democrats and 992 Republicans casting ballots in the unofficial tally. November's election promises to be a hotly contested race, with Carucci already secure on a second line with the Independent Party endorsement and a fourth candidate, Steve Paoletto, who formed his own independent designation, the Human Party.
