Giambra team to continue review of financial plan

The wait for presentation of County Executive Joel A. Giambra's four-year financial plan to the Erie County control board will go on a bit longer.

County officials said Monday it will be this afternoon and possibly this evening before Giambra's team continues its review of the plan and presents it to the control board.

The four-year plan is a requirement of the control board legislation and will affect whether the board continues in its current advisory capacity or will assume all possible powers of a strict financial control board.

GCC 'Report Card' bestows high marks

BATAVIA -- Genesee Community College's annual "Report Card to the Community" gives high marks for the two-year institution's economic impact, with Genesee County, the college's sponsor, realizing almost $37 for every dollar of the more than $1.7 million the county contributes to the college's operating budget.

The report says that local counties save an estimated $2 million annually as the result of college programs and that the 16,000 alumni, 70 percent of whom live in Western New York, have an estimated annual earning power of more than $100 million.

United Way/Red Cross begins annual fund drive

BATAVIA -- The Genesee County United Way/Red Cross began its annual fund drive this week with a goal of $458,000, 5 percent more than last year.

David and Lori Stupp are heading the appeal, which provides funding for 19 services. Last year's drive fell $15,000 short of its $435,000 goal.
