Live-in boyfriend held in woman's beating

NIAGARA FALLS -- A 31-year-old Krull Parkway woman was beaten early Sunday after confronting her live-in boyfriend when he came home drunk.

Police said the woman was repeatedly head-butted, kicked and punched during the 3:15 a.m. assault, which occurred partially in front of her two young children. She also was choked, pushed into a wall, hit over the head with a pan repeatedly and threatened with being thrown out a window, according to police.

Patrick D. Graham, 26, was charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

About 300 dispersed at drinking party

NIAGARA FALLS -- About 300 college-age students were dispersed from the 700 block of Monteagle Street on Saturday afternoon when police broke up a drinking party where several underage youths reportedly were using alcohol.

Police responded to the location shortly before 5 p.m. and found numerous people congregating, many with alcohol. They confiscated a box containing $88, which was being collected to offset the cost of the alcohol.

A 20-year-old Wilson man was being investigated for allegedly distributing alcohol to minors. Brendan P. Wright, 19, no address given, was charged with disorderly conduct and having an open container of alcohol in public.

Arrest made after boy sleeping is shot to death

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Niagara Regional Police captured a suspect Sunday in the shooting death of an 8-year-old boy here a day earlier.

Brian Stephen Daniel, 29, of St. Catharines, was arrested shortly after police, acting on a tip, surrounded a house on Lafayette Drive about 6 p.m. He will be charged with criminal negligence causing death and firearms offenses. Police said they recovered a loaded .45 caliber Ruger pistol.

Daniel is charged in the death of Jordan Smith, 8, who was struck in the back by a bullet about 1 a.m. Saturday while sleeping in his bedroom in his family's apartment on Roehampton Avenue. Police said the shot was fired from an apartment directly above the boy's bedroom.

Police probe claims of sex abuse of children

NIAGARA FALLS -- A middle-aged man who gained the confidence of his landlords is under investigation for allegedly sexually abusing their young daughters and other neighborhood children.

The man reportedly reached down the front of the pants of at least three girls, ages 8 and 9, on several occasions. The mother of two of the victims contacted police Saturday night after a friend of her daughter's informed her of the abuse.

Police said the man frequently had the children visit his apartment and occasionally baby-sat for some of them.

Tailgating leads to arrest of man on DWI charge

WHEATFIELD -- Tailgating on the Cayuga Drive Extension resulted in the arrest of a Sanborn man early Sunday on a charge of drunken driving.

Christopher A. Allen, 31, of West Street, was stopped at 3:42 a.m., Niagara County sheriff's deputies said. He registered a 0.19 reading on an alcohol sensor, more than twice the legal limit, and was charged with driving while intoxicated and following too closely.

Deputies also arrested a North Tonawanda man after stopping him early Sunday for driving with only one headlight.

A records check revealed that Ronald A. Batug, 41, of Lower Schenk Street, was driving with an expired license and that his privileges also had been suspended for failure to pay child support.

Con man makes $17 in bill changing

TOWN OF LOCKPORT -- A quick-talking con man scored $17 from a clerk at the South Transit Road Tim Hortons store Friday night, confusing him with a bill-changing scheme, Niagara County sheriff's deputies said.

The man went to the restaurant's drive-through window and asked for $20 worth of change involving small bills, police said. While the clerk attempted to accommodate the man, he kept giving and taking bills, eventually driving off with $17 more than he should have received.
