Services for Sarah L. Boykins, a retired barber, will be at noon Friday in St. John Baptist Church, 184 Goodell St., after a wake at 11. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.

Mrs. Boykins died Monday in Episcopal Church Home after a long illness. She was 84.

Born Sarah Paige in Rankin County, Miss., one of 12 children, she moved to Buffalo in 1951.

In 1960, she became a licensed master barber and eight years later opened Boykins Barberette on East Delavan Avenue. She operated the business until 1993.

In 1991, Mrs. Boykins achieved a lifetime goal: receiving her high school equivalency diploma.

She had been president of the East Delavan Block Club, a volunteer with the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County and member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, its gospel and bells choirs and its Missionary Society.

Survivors include a son, Charles Jr. of Cheektowaga; a daughter, Shirley Boykins Kelly of Buffalo; a sister, Mary Lillard of Buffalo; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
