"Confident," "personal fortunes" and "well-attired" are characteristics good enough for the founders of our great country, like Washington, Madison, Adams and Jefferson, but according to Donn Esmonde not befitting our County Comptroller Nancy Naples. His article crossed the line from being a critique of her job performance to an outright personal attack.
Naples served the citizens of Erie County for all the right reasons. She didn't enter public life to establish an identity, secure financial resources or acquiesce to political party pressures. Naples is a bright, independent, highly successful businesswoman who sought to serve a community that has been good to her and her family.
Those who wonder why highly competent, successful people fail to run for public office need look no further than people like Esmonde who use their pen, in a one-paper town, to denigrate those who have chosen to serve.
