In regard to Cheektowaga's problem with wildlife, it's clear to many residents that local police should not be doing the State Department of Environmental Conservation's dirty work and using our tax money to do it. If DEC officials had followed Victor Reinstein's provisions for the Reinstein Preserve from the beginning, they wouldn't be in this mess. The DEC is using our officials and our tax money to solve a problem it created.
In August 2004, Ron Reinstein II wrote in The News: "It is because of the urbanization of Cheektowaga that deer congregate in one area. . . . Let's not do anything about this now, while we can, and then do nothing but complain when it's gone or beyond repair. When the woods no longer exists, we can all go and congratulate the DEC on a job well done."
Well, apparently we haven't learned from the past. Let's shoot the deer, kill the geese and build a bike trail. Then we can congratulate the Town Board and the DEC on another job well done.
