The Syracuse SkyChiefs got in the last blow in a home run duel against the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night in Alliance Bank Stadium.
Aaron Hill cracked a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the SkyChiefs a 10-9 victory over the Herd in the opener of a six-game road trip for Buffalo.
Hill's homer was the eighth of the game as the SkyChiefs out-homered the Herd, 5-3.
Chad Zerbe (3-2) was the victim of the game-winner after the Bisons had rallied in the top of the ninth to tie the game on a two-run blast by John Rodriguez.
Rodriguez's homer came after Brandon Phillips was drilled in the back by a pitch from Justin Miller. Phillips called for time and stepped out of the batter's box as Miller was in his windup.
Phillips approached the mound and both dugouts emptied, but no punches were thrown.
Phillips took his base and Rodriguez delivered a monster homer that finished Miller. Adrian Burnside (2-0) came on to get the final two outs.
Ryan Garko started the parade of home runs with a solo shot that gave the Bisons a 4-0 lead in the third. Jake Gautreau's two-run shot in the fourth made it 6-0.
Bases-empty homers by Chad Mottola and Eric Crozier in the fourth began the Syracuse comeback. John-Ford Griffin's three-run shot highlighted a four-run fifth by the SkyChiefs to make it 7-6.
Anton French hit a solo homer in the sixth to tie it, and Syracuse took a 9-7 lead later in the inning on a two-run single by Griffin.
Bisons starter Kyle Denney struggled even with the big lead he was given. He gave up 10 hits and six runs in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Kazuhito Tadano was touched for three more runs in his 2 2/3 innings of middle relief.
Today's scheduled wrap-up to the two-game series was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader May 7.
