Dolores Ann Valvo, a well-known local businesswoman, died Sunday in Douglas Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 85.
Born Dolores Ferdinandi, the Fort Erie native had worked at Trico Products Corp. during World War II.
She and her husband, Ross, then bought the George Brothers building on Jarvis Street and opened a successful grocery business that she managed until the late 1960s.
In the early 1970s, Mrs. Valvo began a second career as a real estate agent. She worked for Furtney Real Estate, now known as Century 21 Today Realty, for more than 25 years, retiring in 1998.
Mrs. Valvo also had worked in the mutuels department at Fort Erie Race Track.
Her husband died in March.
Survivors include a daughter and son, Wendy Ann and Richard, both of Fort Erie; a sister, Mary Drury of Fort Erie; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, 310 Central Ave. Burial will be private.
