About 20 members of Buffalo's building trade unions protested Monday outside the Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Organizers said the protest targeted the Buffalo Sewer Authority's hiring of an out-of-state, nonunion contractor for work at the plant.
William Bohen, business agent for the local ironworkers union, said the trade unions see the Bird Island project as one more indication that too many local construction jobs are going to out-of-town, nonunion workers.
An authority official said Kranic Environmental Contractors had been selected because it submitted a low bid. The contractor also intends to rely on local subcontractors and some local union employees, the official said.
