James Bailey Jr., 65, died Thursday at home after a short illness.
Born in Montgomery, Ala., Mr. Bailey completed high school in Alabama and attended the University of Alabama for three years. He moved to Buffalo from Hartford, Conn., in the early 1970s and worked with the Community Action Organization for several years.
He worked for several community service organizations before taking a job 11 years ago with the Fire Survival Center, which provides food, clothing, furniture and other assistance for fire victims, and also is involved in fire prevention and firefighter advocacy efforts. He remained the director at the time of his death.
He loved music, carpentry and working for the community, his family said.
Survivors include his parents, Flossie Neal of Manchester, Ga., and James of Montgomery; three daughters, Deidre Daniels of Atlanta, and Michelle and Angela, both of Buffalo; two sons, Anthony Easterling and Rodney, both of Buffalo; a brother, Melvin of Oakland, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday in Providence Memorial Chapel, 1275 Sycamore, at Oberlin. Burial is in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
