The Orleans County Sheriff's Department has issued an alert after a couple walking the shores of Lake Ontario found a human jawbone Wednesday morning.
Orleans County Coroner Scott Schmitt was summoned and combed the beach for any other skeletal remains but did not find any, officials said.
Undersheriff Steve Smith said a Batavia a couple found the jawbone while walking along Lakeshore Road. They alerted the sheriff's Marine Unit at Point Breeze Road, which sent the jawbone to the Monroe County medical examiner's office in Rochester.
Officials are asking anyone walking along the shore to be on the lookout for clothing or other skeletal remains. Call police at (585) 589-5527.
