District 5 Republicans picked William Hall of Alfred on Tuesday to fill the Allegany County Legislature vacancy created when Robert Heineman of Alfred resigned at the end of March.
Hall, former mayor of Alfred, is a professor in Alfred University's criminal-justice department.
Heineman, a political science professor at the university, had been in the Legislature since 1995. He led the successful effort to change members' pay from per diem to an annual salary.
District 5 includes the towns of Alfred, Allen, Almond, Birdsall, Burns, Grove and West Almond.
Democrats have chosen Carla Coch of Alfred Station as their candidate to run against Hall in the fall.
All 15 seats in the Legislature are up for election in November for four-year terms beginning Jan. 1.
