LAKE SHORE SURPRISES PIONEER, 3-1

Lake Shore's rough start to the season got a whole lot better on Monday.

The Eagles, winless in their first five starts, handed division leader Pioneer its first loss, 3-1, in an ECIC II baseball game.

Pioneer entered the game at 8-0, 3-0. Sophomore Kyle Leach pitched a two-hitter and Jim Forster had two doubles and a single for Lake Shore (1-5, 1-4).

Monsignor Martin Association: Nick Balisteri drove in Rick Bittner with the winning run as St. Mary's of Lancaster (3-1), coming off Friday's win over St. Joe's, rallied to drop St. Francis, 3-2. Brad Gibson's two-run single in the seventh tied the game for the Lancers. Gary Schmelzer pitched a two-hitter for the win. . . . Jim Lougen drove in five runs and joined Chris Larry with four hits as St. Joe's cruised to a 15-1 win over Cardinal O'Hara.

ECIC IV: Nick Keggins struck out 15 for Cleveland Hill in a 22-3 win over Lackawanna.

Cornell Cup: Josh Batton drove in John Cousins with the winning run in the eighth inning and Greg Simonick stole four bases as Traditional beat Bennett, 13-12. . . . E.J. Cieslikowski and Anthony Coronado had three hits each as Riverside beat Grover Cleveland, 22-9. . . . Nate Rojek pitched a two-hitter with 17 K's as City Honors shut out Seneca, 9-0. . . . Chris Schuster, Eric Wagner and Mike Flatley combined for six RBIs as South Park cruised past Burgard, 20-7. . . . Dan Igielinski and Paul Guadagno had four hits each as Hutch-Tech outslugged McKinley, 19-12.

Niagara Frontier League: Jordan Sibbet plated the go-ahead run with a two-run triple as Kenmore East edged Grand Island, 10-9. Jeff Shearer added a three-run triple for the Bulldogs. . . . Kyle Smith had a two-run double to highlight a four-run seventh for Niagara-Wheatfield in a 5-3 win over North Tonawanda. . . . Josh Coney had three hits and Nick Fabiano fashioned a five-hitter as Lew-Port survived Niagara Falls, 12-10. . . . Chris Knapp had a three-run homer with six RBIs and Brandon Gearla struck out 10 as Lockport shut out Kenmore West, 15-0.

Niagara-Orleans League: Andre Kinder fanned 14 in six innings and Zak Lester and Ramon Andino drove in three runs each for Albion in a 15-2 win over Barker. . . . Nick Moley and Steve Geltz combined on a three-hitter with 13 K's as Wilson blanked Akron, 8-0. . . . Alex Kurtz's two-run single helped Newfane top Medina, 5-3.

Softball

ECIC II: Rebecca Master drove in Danielle McGowen with the winning in the 10th as Amherst edged Williamsville East, 2-1. The Flames took a 1-0 lead when Megan Rumschik scored Amanda Bihr. The Tigers answered when Emily Warren drove in Molly Lane for the tie.

ECIC III: Chelsea Plimpton had 10 strikeouts and Dana Carter and Michelle Fridey each homered as Williamsville South beat Maryvale, 11-1. Lauren Falzone and Megan Faber added two hits each for the Billies (5-0, 3-0), winners of 33 straight.

Niagara-Orleans League: Jenn Biernacki pitched a 1-hitter, striking out 18 and Stephanie Mirand homered to lead Medina past Newfane, 5-0. . . . Megan Farrell had three hits and Amy Allen added a two-run triple as Akron jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and beat Wilson, 12-8. Melissa Moore and Janelle Lewis each drove in two runs with a pair of singles in Barker's 10-8 win over Albion.

Niagara Frontier League: Rachael Cirello scored the winning run on an error in the seventh inning as Lockport edged Kenmore West, 3-2. . . . Freshman Kyrstin Lekki drove in three runs with three hits and scored twice in support of Andrea Cornelius' three-hitter in Niagara-Wheatfield's 7-2 win over North Tonawanda. . . . Krista Moran drove in Colleen George with the go-ahead run to cap a three-run seventh inning as Grand Island rallied to beat Kenmore East, 4-3.

Monsignor Martin Association: Katie Kaczor and Gretchen Bauer drove in three runs each and Maggie Henderson struck out seven as Nardin got past Cardinal O'Hara, 9-7. . . . Dom Celotto homered and Anne Dobmeier pitched a three-hitter as Holy Angels beat Mount St. Mary, 5-1. . . . Elyse Monte had a three-run homer and Kristen DeCarlo had three hits for Sacred Heart in an 11-0 win over Buffalo Seminary. . . . Brenna Walsh fanned seven and Laura Hare drove in two runs as Niagara Catholic moved to 4-0 with a 7-5 win over St. Mary's of Lancaster.

Independent: Lauren Smith drove in four runs with three hits and Ashley Dlugosz homered as Immaculata (6-0) defeated Nichols, 18-8.

Thompson Trophy: Emily Zuchlewski pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts while Chandra Roberson and Alyssa Garnett had three hits each in City Honors' 16-0 win over daVinci. . . . Sara Buscaglia and Janine Ziemba had three hits each and Dawn Mancinelli scattered five hits for Emerson in a 16-5 win over Grover Cleveland. . . . Ashley Darcy homered in South Park's 12-8 win over Riverside. . . . Christina Colosimo drove in six runs with two home runs and Brianna Speck had four hits with five RBIs as McKinley bombed Lafayette, 24-4. . . . Ashley Casey hit a grand slam and Kristin Banks had a home run among her three hits as Buffalo Arts beat Bennett, 16-2 in five innings.
