A 23-year-old Buffalo man was shot in the back of the neck Sunday night in front of his Burgard Place home, Homicide Squad detectives said today.

Larry Kemp was listed in fair condition today in Erie County Medical Center. His wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

Detectives at the Major Crimes Unit said that at about 10:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Burgard Place Kemp came under a barrage of bullets police believe were being fired from multiple guns on both sides of the street.

A Homicide Squad detective said the shooting might be in retaliation for the murder of Daryl M. Smith, 26, who was gunned down Saturday night on Genesee Street, near Bailey Avenue and Burgard Place.

"We think this could be a retaliation for the shooting from the night before," said Detective Michael Mordino.

Detectives said Kemp was shot in front of a known drug house. Officers recovered several 9 mm casings at the scene. No arrests have been made.
