Amid intensifying political pressure, MetLife Inc. announced Friday it would delay some previously announced job cuts at Traveler's Life & Annuity, the Hartford-based insurer it hopes to acquire this year.
MetLife now says it plans to cut 390 jobs, rather than 600 positions, when it acquires Traveler's from Citigroup Inc. in a $11.5 billion deal. Another 100 jobs will be relocated.
The announcement cheered Gov. M. Jodi Rell who pressed the insurer to limit employment losses and prompted state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal to drop his threat to fight the merger, which must be approved by the state Insurance Department.
