LEWIS RE-ENACTOR LEAVES CLARK FOR MORE EXPLORING

Lewis has left Clark, but the parting was amicable.

Scott Mandrell, who has portrayed Meriwether Lewis in dozens of events for the 200th anniversary of Lewis and William Clark's trek across the West, wants to spend more time retracing the explorers' journey, while his fellow re-enactors want to continue taking part in bicentennial events along the route.

"Our paths diverged," Mandrell said Friday.

Other people will portray Lewis at the bicentennial events for the re-enactment group, Discovery Expedition of St. Charles.

As for Clark, his great-great-great-grandson Bud often portrays him, though other people fill in for him sometimes.

The St. Charles re-enactors traveled the explorers' route from Missouri to North Dakota last year. This month, they began their journey from North Dakota to the Pacific. In 2006, they plan to go to Oregon to trace a path back to St. Louis.
