A fire caused $50,000 damage Wednesday afternoon to a two-family home in Akron that was being renovated, Amherst fire officials reported.

The Akron Fire Company reported arriving at 20 Clinton St. less than four minutes after the alarm sounded at 3:46 p.m. The rear of the two-story home was engulfed in flames. Neither family was at home when the fire broke out.

Firefighters from Newstead and Clarence Center responded to a mutual-aid call, and the fire was under control at 4:14 p.m. The cause remained under investigation.
