A suspected bank robber was killed Wednesday in a shootout with a sheriff's deputy 30 miles southeast of Rochester.
A man armed with a 12-gauge shotgun blew out a security camera after walking into a branch of Ontario National Bank in Phelps, Sheriff Phil Povero said.
Bank employees called 911 and a veteran deputy arrived just in time to see the suspect driving out of the parking lot, the sheriff said. The deputy chased the suspect for about a mile before the suspect's car went off the road and hit a utility pole.
The man got out of the car and shot the deputy in the ankle. The officer then returned fire and killed the man, the sheriff said.
