A Mass of Christian Burial for Edward D. Szymanski, an active and devout Catholic, will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Casimir Catholic Church, Weimar and Casimir streets, with prayers at 9 in the Sittniewski Funeral Home, 154 Weimar St. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
Mr. Szymanski, 94, died Monday in Harbor Health Care Center, shortly after serving Mass and communion to fellow residents. He had lived there four years.
A Buffalo native, Mr. Szymanski attended St. Casimir's School in Kaisertown and was a retired box factory worker.
Known as "Mr. Ed," Mr. Szymanski was a lifetime parishioner of St. Casimir's Church, where he served as parish sacristan, eucharistic minister and lector.
While serving under the late Monsignor Edward L. Kazmierczak, he had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Karol Wojtyla during his visit to the parish in 1976, shortly before he became Pope John Paul II.
Mr. Szymanski established St. Casimir's Mission Group, which gathered rosaries, medals, holy pictures, books and pamphlets for missions abroad, in countries such as Indonesia, India, Mozambique and Mongolia.
