The Justice Department asked a federal court Tuesday to permanently bar two local tax preparers and their company, claiming they shortchanged the Treasury out of more than $2.2 million from 2000 through 2002.
Brian Duffek, of Orchard Park, and Patrick O'Connor, of Lake View, and their firm, Duffek, O'Connor & Associates Inc., of the Town of Hamburg, are accused of claiming improper deductions for fictitious or inflated charitable contributions and employee expenses.
According to the complaint, Duffek and O'Connor have prepared income tax returns since the late 1990s, and prepared more than 1,900 tax returns for tax years 2000 through 2002.
The government also sought an order directing the tax preparers to provide the government customers' names, telephone and Social Security numbers, as well as their mailing and e-mail addresses.
The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York State.
