Allegany County legislators Monday officially went on record urging Gov. George E. Pataki to eliminate proposed restrictions on Empire Zones.

Legislator Susan Myers, R-Friendship, told the Legislature that if the governor does not veto or alter the legislation, the Friendship-Cuba zone would be crippled.

She said the new law would limit zones to no more than three contiguous areas in a county, while the zone in Allegany County currently includes sites in 16 municipalities.

Myers said the zone in Chautauqua County is similar, with several sites scattered throughout the county. She said if the law had been in effect previously, several projects responsible for creating many jobs would not have taken root.

The County Legislature unanimously approved the resolution and ordered it sent to Pataki and the state legislators representing the county.
