The Southern Tier Association Rails to Trails has proposed renaming its 12-mile trail in memory of seven-year State Sen. Patricia K. McGee of the 57th District, who died April 2.
The Cattaraugus County Planning Board voted to support a resolution Thursday, at the request of START Director Rick LeFeber, who said the group will take its request to all its supporting groups. A resolution will be presented to the Cattaraugus County Legislature on Wednesday.
LeFeber said the START board unanimously agreed to change the trail's name as a way of honoring the memory of McGee, who supported some trail funding initiatives and the widespread growth of snowmobiling, which accounts for a large portion of the trail users.
The name-change initiative began with McGee's death, just as START was preparing to install 56 new identifying signs along the abandoned rail bed. If the support is widespread, a June 4 ribbon-cutting will be staged during the American Hiking Society's 13th annual National Trails Day.
