Douglas Turner recently commented on the ads targeting Rep. Tom Reynolds' stand on various issues, including Social Security reform and his support of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. The threat of the big, bad boogeyman, Moveon.org, is starting to wear thin, and will not play as well here in Western New York as it would in any "red state."
This "staying on message" concept championed by Karl Rove proved its worth in last year's presidential election, but it's starting to lose its effectiveness. By trying to equate opposition with some vast liberal conspiracy, it is becoming apparent that neither Reynolds nor DeLay is able to participate in any meaningful debate on issues that will threaten their political clout or offend their conservative base.
A final note on "Western New York values." We have seen the recent ineptness of our County Legislature, and there will be political casualties, including the county executive and several legislators. We will hold our elected officials accountable, and if we are nothing more than pawns in a congressional power play, we will hold our congressman accountable in the next midterm election.
