Buffalo homicide detectives on Saturday arrested a suspect in the 2003 beating death of a 51-year-old city man.

Police charged Michael W. Smith, 23, of Locust Street, with second-degree murder in the 18-month-old case, according to Detective Sgt. Daniel Figueroa.

Smith is accused of beating to death Samuel Hill, a Genesee Street resident, on Sept. 26, 2003, on the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue.

Detective Timothy McDonald and Detective Sgt. Danny Derenda led the investigation into the case, which was aided when a witness to the crime came forward to police. The witness identified Smith in a lineup, Figueroa said.

Police do not yet have a motive.
