The renovation of the Niagara County Courthouse has been chosen by the New York chapter of the American Public Works Association as its historic preservation project of the year.

The award will be presented at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at a luncheon in Protocol Restaurant, 6766 Transit Road, Amherst. Recipients will be the county Public Works Department; Mach Architecture, the engineering consultant; and Construction Services Group of Upstate New York, the contractor on the $267,500 job.

It involved repairing and repainting the gilded interior of the courthouse dome and reopening the glass "eye" at its zenith, and removing decades of old paint to reveal the original yellow-orange color and marble-like texture of the once-dingy interior of the building.
