Gustav Polak, a retired employee of General Motors Powertrain, died Wednesday in Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He was 72.
Born in Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic, he moved to the Tonawandas 50 years ago. For the last 27 years, he lived in the City of Tonawanda.
For 27 years, Mr. Polak was a forklift operator for the GM Powertrain-Chevrolet Division in the Town of Tonawanda, retiring in 1998. Prior to that, he worked for Remington Rand.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Polak was a member of New Apostolic Church in the Town of Tonawanda. He also was a member of Tonawandas Post 264, American Legion.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Hannelore Schneck Polak; a daughter, Sonia of the City of Tonawanda; a son, Ronny of the Town of Tonawanda; and a sister, Marie Kuhn of the City of Tonawanda.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in New Apostolic Church, 314 Pine Ridge Road, Cheektowaga.
