IT'S A SPLIT DECISION FOR UB, CANISIUS

James Kingsley (Medina) belted four hits, two of them home runs, for five RBIs to lead the University at Buffalo to a 16-0 rout of Canisius in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins put on a power display of their own in the second game. Third-inning home runs by Matt Mazurek (Silver Creek) and Gabe Baida led Canisius to an 8-4 victory.

Kingsley hit a two-run shot in the first inning of the opener and struck for a solo shot in the fourth as the Bulls pounded four Canisius pitchers for 18 hits. Dan Quinn and John Boom had three hits each for the winners. Kingsley has five homers this season.

Adam Ruszkowski, Tony Kurtz and Sean McWilliams of the Bulls combined to shut out the Griffs on one hit, striking out six and walking three. Eric Schefski singled in the first for the lone Canisius hit.

Canisius scored six times in the third inning to take command of the nightcap as Mazurek hit a two-run shot and Baida also homered with a man aboard. Baida had three hits in the game.

Alex Winiewicz (Clarence) pitched three innings of shutout relief to pick up the save for Canisius (3-15). UB is 10-12.

A grand slam in the eighth inning by Jamie Rose snapped an 8-8 tie and sent LeMoyne (9-8) to a 12-9 victory at St. Bonaventure (11-9). Brian Pellegrini drove in four runs with a pair of singles for the Bonnies, who built an 8-4 lead but were held to one run and three hits over the last 6 1/3 innings by five relievers. Damian Blakely had three hits for the Bonnies.

Chris Wood hit his third home run in two days and Matt Griffiths had five hits on the day as ECC (10-6, 4-0 in Region III) swept Alfred State, 7-1 and 8-3. Brian Alterio and Nate Wolfe were the winning pitchers for the Kats.

SOFTBALL: Freshman Nicole Sibuda (Orchard Park) pitched a five-hitter in the first game and Lauren Wright (Westfield) scattered six hits in the second as Buffalo State (14-2) won a pair from Rochester Institute of Technology, 7-0 and 6-0. Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls) and Heidi Rammacher (Lake Shore) each went 3 for 4 in the opener for the Bengals. Alyssa Brosius (North Tonawanda) was 3 for 4 in the nightcap. . . . Hilbert's Meghan Gollaher earned two victories in a doubleheader against Wells College, 14-0 and 9-0, striking out 13. Kaitlin Miller (Depew) had five hits, five RBIs and stole four bases for the Hawks.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE: Shantel Ackley and Erin Sily each netted three goals to help Buffalo State over Allegheny, 13-5, in Meadville, Pa. Chelsey Frail and Morgan Perry (Grand Island) scored twice for the Bengals (2-0), while Janine Forman made 13 saves.

TRACK: ECC's Andy Forma (Elma) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:46 and the 800 meters in 2:01 at the Houghton Invitational to qualify for the NJCAA national meet.
