QUAKE BRINGS NO REPORT OF INJURIES, DAMAGE

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake rattled northeastern Japan early today, but no injuries or damage was immediately reported, and no tsunami alert was issued, a news report said.

The quake shook Fukushima and Ibaraki, two prefectures northeast of Tokyo, at 2:57 a.m., Kyodo News reported, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The report put the center of the quake in the Pacific Ocean off Fukushima, about 2 1/2 miles below the surface.

Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.
