The group that has led the lobbying efforts to preserve the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station for the past 10 years is holding a community membership drive during April.
Chairman Merrell Lane said the group hopes to sign up 1,000 members this month to demonstrate community support for the air base. The Pentagon is expected to announce a list of proposed base closures May 16.
The drive will be headed by retired Air Force Lt. Col. William C. Gwizdowski. Membership fees are $10 for individuals, $25 for small businesses and $50 for corporations.
"If we all step forward, we can show the commission that is studying base closings the tremendous support we know is here for our air reserve station," Lane said. The air base is Niagara County's second-largest employer, with more than 2,200 full- and part-time jobs.
