COAST GUARD ASSISTS NAVY ISLAND KAYAKERS

Two kayakers who had paddled to Navy Island in the upper Niagara River on Friday morning received assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The kayakers had taken a 14-foot boat with them over to the island, not far from the brink of Niagara Falls, but that vessel got loose from its anchoring, according to Coast Guard officials.

Efforts by the kayakers to recover the boat were successful, but when the Coast Guard showed up to investigate the situation at about 9:15 a.m., the kayakers accepted a ride back to Grand Island on the Coast Guard's boat.
