An Irving man who shot himself in the head inside a Derby medical clinic late Wednesday night remained in critical condition Thursday in Erie County Medical Center.

Bruce Zgoda, 42, of Erie Road, was a patient in the Caro Medical Center dating back to 1995, according to Evans police.

Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, Zgoda was found by a medical center supervisor hiding in a locked room of a massage therapy office smoking cigarettes.

He had a gun to his head with his finger on the trigger.

Zgoda shot himself once with the gun as the supervisor was calling 911.

Police said Zgoda had a note with him thanking the staff of the medical center.

Detectives believe Zgoda did not mean to harm "anybody but himself," adding that the .22-caliber rifle he brandished was loaded only with a single bullet.

Police believe that Zgoda was troubled over family matters and medical problems.
