Barbara A. Brandes of the Town of Hamburg, who taught in the Lackawanna School District, died Dec. 21 in Mercy Hospital after an 18-year battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 72.
Born Barbara Chojnacki Lewis in Amsterdam, she taught second grade and remedial math in Lackawanna schools, retiring in 1986. She also taught second grade in the West Seneca School District.
A graduate of Lackawanna High School, she earned a bachelor's degree from Buffalo State College in 1953 and a master's degree in library science from Syracuse University in 1973.
At Syracuse, she was a straight-A student and a member of the Beta Phi Mu honorary society. She also was a member of the Adventuress of Sherlock Homes, Irish Secret Society and other literary organizations.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Kenneth.
