A graduate of West Seneca East Senior High School who was vacationing in Thailand was able to safely flee the deadly waves caused by Sunday's earthquake, his mother said Wednesday.
John McCarthy, who has been teaching English in Osaka, Japan, was in an area of Thailand that was struck by tsunamis, according to Mary McCarthy. He was supposed to go on a boat ride that day but instead went on an elephant ride and was able to flee the waves.
"He said he was a lucky one," his mother related.
McCarthy, 23, stayed in a shelter until he left Wednesday for the Bangkok airport, his mother said.
