Retired Buffalo Police Officer Joseph M. Schihl, of Cheektowaga, died Wednesday in St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. He was 86.
A native of the Riverside section of Buffalo, Mr. Schihl was a police officer from 1942 to 1980, when he retired. He was a driver for then-Police Commissioner James Cunningham from 1942 to 1946. He was attached to Precinct 13 in Riverside for 38 years.
A graduate of Riverside High School, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Riverside and Infant of Prague Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alberta L.; four daughters, Bonnie Kutzbach, Dale Ann Quail and Christina Goodheart, all of Cheektowaga, and Deborah of Buffalo; two sons, James of Lancaster and Joseph M. "Jody" of Richmond, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:45 a.m. Friday in Infant of Prague Church, 921 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga, after prayers at 9:15 in Amigone Funeral Home, 569 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
