STORE OWNER OVERCOMES ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT

A Busti Avenue man was arrested Wednesday night after he allegedly tried to rob a Niagara Street liquor store, armed with a BB gun, and was wrestled to the ground by the store owner, police said.

Hussain Al-Zairgawy, 38, was charged with two counts of attempted robbery, criminal use of a firearm and resisting arrest.

Central District Police said Al-Zairgawy was wearing a plastic mask when he walked into Niagara Liquors, 351 Niagara St., near Maryland Street, and displayed a BB gun about 8 p.m.

According to police, the store owner pushed the suspect, wrestled the weapon from his hand and struck the suspect in his head.

Officers Kevin Biggs and Victor Santiago subdued the suspect and said they found a box cutter in his pocket. After being treated in Erie County Medical Center, the suspect was taken to the Erie County Holding Center pending court proceedings.
