A letter writer stated that we should not give taxpayers' money to Bass Pro to build a new shop, but to the Seneca Nation of Indians to build a large-scale casino. There are a couple of problems with this idea. Besides the gambling problems that a casino brings, we already have the enormous Niagara Fallsview Casino less than 30 miles away.
Unlike casinos, which are becoming increasingly common in Western New York, Bass Pro Shops draw fishing and hunting enthusiasts from a 300-mile radius. Downtown is just begging for a new franchise, and I think that such a store would do better than a casino.
