A Buffalo man has been arraigned in the Nov. 2 beating and stabbing death of his girlfriend in their Normal Avenue apartment.
John J. Ryan, 45, remained jailed without bail after appearing before State Supreme Court Justice Mario J. Rosetti on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the killing of Carey Bassett, 31. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
Police found Bassett's body after the landlord reported he had not seen her for several days. She had been beaten with a barbell and stabbed several times in the abdomen.
Ryan was arrested the following day at Erie County Medical Center after seeking treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.
