Niagara Street Elementary School has received $517 from the City Market McDonald's restaurant to purchase books for its "Read A Lot Program," which requires all pupils, including kindergartners, to read a certain number of words this year.

The money represents 20 percent of the sales made over a three-hour period on Oct. 5, when school Principal Paulette Mombert and a dozen members of her teaching staff worked the restaurant's counter on "McTeacher's Night," a fund raiser the business sponsored.

Mombert said the school is in an economically depressed neighborhood and does not have the money to buy more books. She said the money will be used to purchase a variety of books so pupils have more interesting titles to read.
