A junior at New Mexico State University died after his 21st birthday celebration led to alcohol poisoning, according to the university.
Steven Judd of El Paso, Texas, marked his birthday with other Delta Chi fraternity members late Wednesday and early Thursday at two Las Cruces bars, police Lt. Randy Lara said. Fraternity members called for help at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday after finding Judd unconscious and not breathing. He died Friday.
Lara said police have no evidence of foul play or hazing.
The university has begun an investigation and has informed the national Delta Chi organization of the incident.
At least five students at schools in Colorado and Arkansas have died this fall after consuming large amounts of alcohol. Authorities say most of the estimated 1,400 alcohol-related deaths each year among college students happen in automobile accidents.
