Damage was pegged at $100,000 from a fire Friday inside the roof of a Sahlen Packing Co. smokehouse oven on Howard Street, Buffalo fire officials said.

The fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m. Fire officials were continuing an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Division Chief Edward Craver said the fire broke out in the top of the smokehouse oven leading to the roof area. Authorities weren't sure whether a complication with the oven sparked the blaze or whether roofers working there Friday contributed to the fire.

The smokehouse oven was in operation at the time of the fire, Craver said. It was unclear what meats were being smoked, however.

Quick response by firefighters was credited with containing the blaze to the roof area.

"The potential was there (for catastrophic damage) but we wanted to cut (the fire) off before it got away," Craver said.

One firefighter was hospitalized after a tile fell from the ceiling and struck him in the face. Neither his identity nor condition was available.
