PROVIDENCE ROLLS ON

Dwight Brewington went 5 for 5 from three-point range and scored a career-high 21 points, leading Providence to an 89-52 win over Pennsylvania in the second round of the Preseason NIT.

Ryan Gomes, who finished with 10 points and a career-high eight assists, hit a pair of three-pointers 29 seconds apart during an 18-2 run midway through the first half as the Friars (2-0) broke the game open.

Providence plays No. 2 Wake Forest in the semifinals Wednesday in Madison Square Garden. Providence was 11 of 17 on three-point attempts.

Brewington scored 19 in the NIT opening-round win over Niagara on Tuesday.

Jan Fikel led the Quakers (1-1) with 13 points.

Chris Paul scored 16 points despite taking just three shots from the field to help No. 2 Wake Forest beat Virginia Commonwealth, 81-67, in the Preseason NIT. Paul hit 14 of 15 free throws and had five assists for the Demon Deacons (2-0), who head to New York for next week's semifinal matchup with Providence.

Salim Stoudamire scored 24 points, including 6 of 9 three-pointers, and 10th-ranked Arizona beat Wright State, 83-66, in the second round of the Preseason NIT. The Wildcats (2-0) play Michigan in the semifinals Wednesday in New York.

Julius Hodge scored 21 points on his 21st birthday to join an exclusive group of Atlantic Coast Conference players, leading No. 19 North Carolina State (2-0) past Elon, 71-45. Hodge has 1,505 points and 303 assists in his career, becoming the 18th ACC player to record at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists.
