Amid a bounty of sports gear, vacations and other goodies offered for auction by local donors, it was an out-of-towner's gift that had people talking Thursday night at a fund-raising event for the Police Athletic League of Buffalo.

Billionaire Donald Trump donated $5,000 of the speaking fee he received for his Sept. 30 appearance at the University at Buffalo.

Kate Masiello, wife of Mayor Anthony M. Masiello, presented a check to Susan M. Gonzalez, PAL's executive director, "for all the children here in Buffalo."

A banquet room in Salvatore's Italian Gardens in Lancaster was the setting for raffles and a live auction, called by former Buffalo Sabres player Danny Gare, to raise money for the PAL.

"All not-for-profits are fighting for the same dollar," Gonzalez said. "Government funding is shrinking for everyone, so we all have to be creative."

"We're thrilled to have been selected by him," Gonzalez said of Trump's donation.

Trump received $200,000 for speaking at UB. He explained, at the time, that portions of his fees usually are donated to charitable organizations.
