Mary A. Hayes, a retired teacher, died unexpectedly Sunday in her Town of Tonawanda home. She was 81.
Born Mary A. Paddon in Buffalo, she was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in history from the University of Buffalo.
She taught in Buffalo schools while studying for her master's degree, then was an intermediate grade teacher in the Sweet Home Central School District for many years, retiring in the early 1990s.
A Town of Tonawanda resident since the mid-1950s, she was a member of the College Club of Buffalo, the American Association of University Women, the New York State United Teachers, the New York State Retired Teachers Association and St. Timothy's Catholic Church.
She was an avid reader and traveler with vast interest in politics and history.
She and her husband, Eugene F., would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, M. Diane Smith of Orchard Park; two sons, David L. of Williamsville and Kevin P. of Cortlandt Manor; and three grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Timothy's Church, 565 East Park Drive, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
