A recent letter writer said that the Vietnamese were not fervent communists, but were simply fighting the United States. This is the most blatant revisionism I have heard in a long time. Ho Chi Minh and the North Vietnamese leadership were devoted communists who fought the French, South Vietnamese Republicans, Americans, Khmers and Laotians. They are proof positive that you can impose a government on people by killing them. They imposed communism in all of Vietnam and killed tens thousands of South Vietnamese in the process.
The Americans did not lose that war. They simply lost their will and quit. The North Vietnamese communists then proceeded to defeat the South Vietnamese Republicans in battle and took over the entire country. Whether this was good for the Vietnamese people in the end is up to them to decide. I'm sure the citizens of France, Belgium, Holland, Kuwait and Afghanistan are glad we didn't quit on them.
