Sister Mary Noella Walas, former administrator of St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga, died Monday in Colette Hilbert Health Center, where she had lived since 2000. She was 87.
A member of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph for nearly 65 years, she served four years as community treasurer and two terms as general minister of the congregation. She also was local treasurer of Immaculate Conception Convent for four years. She retired in 1994.
Born Mary Antonina Walas in Massachusetts, she entered the order on Dec. 8, 1939, in Chicopee, Mass. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from St. John's University in Jamaica and served for 25 years at St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn.
Sister Mary Noella will be remembered as a woman of deep prayer, vision and practicality and an experienced seamstress.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Immaculate Conception Convent Chapel, 5286 South Park Ave., Town of Hamburg. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
