REV. UREESE CHILLIS, CHURCH FOUNDER
JAN. 29, 1929 -- NOV. 6, 2004

The Rev. Ureese Chillis, a founder of New Hope Church of God in Christ in Buffalo, died Nov. 6 in Buffalo General Hospital. He was 75.

A native of Dublin, Ga., the longtime Buffalo resident attended the University of Buffalo. He was involved in the founding of the Masten Avenue church in 1963 and was still serving as pastor at the time of his death.

Mr. Chillis also had served as superintendent in District 4 of the Western New York Church of God in Christ.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Martha Gibson; two daughters, Mary M. Davenport of Houston, and Pastor Dee Sellers of Bensalem, Pa.; a sister, Minnie Wright of Buffalo; a brother, Ulysees of Buffalo; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A wake was held today in McCoy Convention Center, 553 Adams St., followed by a funeral. Burial was in Forest Lawn.
