MAN WITH ALZHEIMER'S SAFE AFTER ALL-NIGHT WALK

A 79-year-old Allegany man with Alzheimer's disease who abandoned his car on Route 5 early Friday morning apparently walked about 10 miles before he was spotted by a motorist about six hours later, Town of Evans police said Friday.

The man was wet and muddy, but otherwise unhurt, following his overnight trek that led authorities on an extensive search of the area.

The man's locked car was found parked on the shoulder of eastbound Route 5, near Sweetland Road, about 2 a.m. His family said he had been missing from home since about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Lt. Samuel V. DeJohn credited his safe return to a motorist who had heard about the missing man on the radio, spotted him shortly after 8 a.m. and took him to the Evans police station. The man apparently had been walking all night, stopping occasionally off the road.
