WOMAN, 85, FREEZES TO DEATH AFTER FALL

An 85-year-old woman froze to death after falling outside her Orange County home, authorities said.

Theresa Moravec, a widow, was found dead Tuesday by her son, who came from his Queens business to check on her after she did not answer his telephone calls.

Police believe she fell from a stone staircase leading off her second-floor deck and was unable to get up. She was found dressed in a light sweater and slacks with a cane nearby.

Temperatures had fallen to 27 degrees Monday night.

Neighbors said the woman, who had Parkinson's disease, kept to herself in the house at the bottom of a dead-end road.

"She was so independent," said neighbor Sherri Ingraham, who estimated she hadn't seen Moravec in a year. "She used to walk up and down the road until about a year ago."

Walden is 63 miles north of New York City.
